Fandom + Joan for the meta ask game!

JOAN!!!! ❤❤❤ thank you for asking! I love talking about her.

For the sake of not conflicting timelines or universes, I stuck with my oc canon where Booker doesn't betray the Guard and things happen normally up until the point where Merrick's men ruin everything and kidnap Joe and Nicky. None of that shit happens. Just some weird new team dynamics forming since they've got TWO new immortals hanging out with them. (I also feel the need to share this ask about Copley for info on that situation and my oc canon.)

Put this whole thing under a read more because it got LONG.

What do you think the fandom for your character would be like? Are they a fan favorite, a love to hate villain, derided for whatever reason, or something else?

Honestly I don't know! I think Joan is a pretty harmless character, she's just chilling and doing her own thing, so she wouldn't be hated. The Old Guard fandom is pretty good about loving all the characters, so she's gonna be fine. I think she'll be especially loved by the people who like characters who just want to do their own thing without getting dragged into plot shenanigans lmao. Hopefully Joan would be to the aroace fans what Nicky and Joe and Andy and Quynh are to the gay fans - the rep they're looking for in action movies. But more critically, because this fandom gives unequal attention to the women vs the guys, I think Joan would unfortunately fall into a similar category as Niles, which is often "the side character who's there to be the best friend supporting the main ship/the newbie to the experienced older ones" if not ignored completely. But for the ones who don't do this, I think she'd be the cool character who just does her own thing, who has a journey of her own that's fun to analyze and talk about! And a long, kinda sad history that would have a lot of potential for fics!

What feelings does your character most often instill in their fans? Affection? A desire to protect? Open lust? A love/hate dynamic? Why do you think their fans feel this way?

Definitely a desire to protect! Girl has been on her own FOREVER! she has anxiety! But also I can see people wanting to be her lmao she lives on her own, pretty securely I might add, she's got a cat, she's best friends with the crows, she's living that Ursula from Kiki's Delivery Service life. Joan's just a normal person, living her life, she just has had a long time to figure out what she wants her life to look like and make it happen, and I can see fans finding wish fulfillment in her.

By contrast, what would their haters dislike about your character? Is it a petty complaint? A mischaracterization of the character or their intentions? Are they just a woman in a largely male-centric series?

I can see common complaints being that she's "boring". Which honestly is fair. She's meant to be boring - or at least have a boring life. She's not an action hero, she's not a warrior, she's a civilian. She wants a normal life, or as normal a life as she can have.

Joan also has issues with how she deals with her frustration over the whole "I wasn't alone but I thought I was" situation. She tries really hard not to take it out on the old guard, but sometimes it slips out without her meaning to even though she knows it wasn't anyone's fault and it was just shitty luck. When it does slip out, it ends up directed at Andy as the leader of the group. I can see some fans having issues with that, since people have similar issues with how Booker felt alone in his grief despite having his friends.

What controversies/drama would your character incite in fandom?

She's pretty low-drama, but since fandoms can be pretty casually or not so casually aphobic, her being aroace could be an issue. I feel like the old guard fandom is better than other fandoms, but I haven't seen all corners of the fandom and ngl I don't want to.

Joan's attitude towards her immortality and how she lives her life is in conflict with Andy's attitude, and that causes some conflict between them, so I can see the fandom getting into discourse over their respective philosophies. But since the movie takes the philosophy that nihilism isn't the answer, or at least that trying to make things better isn't meaningless, I can't see this being a huge controversial topic. maybe in smaller corners of the fandom.

What fan-material would exist for your character in fandom?

There'd probably be angsty artwork of her being alone and feeling lonely lmao. I can see a lot of fics analyzing her loneliness and anxiety through the centuries. Fics that explore how she navigated the centuries alone, as well as lots of fics where she almost meets the guard but just misses them, or aus where she did find them. Fics where she and the guard are just hanging out and being a found family together. I can see some angsty aus where she ends up captured before canon and Nile dreams of her and they're like "Wait there's another one of us out there BEING TORTURED???" and they go save her.

Is your character the subject of ‘imagines’ or ‘x reader’ style blogs?

Well, I haven't seen many imagines for The Old Guard in the first place, but since Joan's aroace, I sure hope not!

Are there any tropes fandom would put upon your character, for better or for worse?

"Hates romance." She hates it in regards to herself, but otherwise she just doesn't care about it. (You react with digust at the idea of dating your friend one time and you get labelled for life...)

I think people would also try to make her a woobie but like, even though she has had a rough time of it she's not miserable. She's learned to live her life as it comes, and yeah, she's lonely, she has her traumas, but she's still enjoying her life.

People might also assign her as a character who simply has the worst luck or the worst timing and. Honestly I think that would be kinda funny so I don't mind it.

What would be the ‘incorrect but wildly popular’ interpretation of your character in fandom?

The fandom would try and make Joan and Andy have conflict all the time and that's simply not true. Their philosophies clash. They have some beef, but that's mostly to do with their own issues and how it connects to the other. They themselves actually get along and respect each other a lot. They do have some conflict, but they still get along outside of that.

also I feel like people would make Joan a little "too anxious"? She does have anxiety but I feel like they would overdo it somehow, I don't know.

What corners of fandom would consider your character blorbo material?

I feel like The Old Guard fandom blorbo-fies all of the characters pretty well. But I really hope that the aroace members of the fandom would like her and make her their blorbo! Like that's the dream for me.

I bash Nikki/Nate as a couple a lot but I do think there was potential and promise with them. Plus I love a good smart girl/jock pairing.

In That 90s Pilot, they were the ‘comedic’ ones that’d make me laugh out loud but there wasn’t really anything too bad with them.

In Free Leia, Nate asking Red for the shirt and saying that he just wants to keep Nikki happy was so sweet. They were such a cute couple that episode. With Nikki helping Nate when he was choking.

But then fast forward to the The Rave and Nikki’s bossing Nate around like Jackie did with Kelso and just like Kelso, Nate’s just…taking it. Also the whole fawning over half naked girls thing at the rave, then again he’s like 16 so it’s whatever but just a note.

And then in Step By Step, Nikki wants to do something that’s important to her and Nate ditches her to get a used hot tub. This is minor, but it’s giving me Winter vibes where Jackie wants Hyde to come to the Christmas party and he’s like ‘nope blah blah that’s your fault blah blah you’re overreacting’. I did like the end where he’s like ‘you’re a goat’s mommy now.’ But this episode also proves that Gwen/Nikki is the superior ship.

Next is The Birthday Girl, the episode they officially plummet to their downfall. Nate can’t even remember something basic as spelling Nikki’s name, which may not seem like a big deal. If she was a friend or they were newer to dating. But niknate have been together for 6 months and he doesn’t know??? Also one of his first rebuttals being ‘ask me about your boobs, I’ll draw those on a napkin.’ And later in the episode, Nate can remember the song that played when she let him touch her butt. It’s like sex is all he thinks of her. And Nikki being so touched in that scene like ‘oh he remembered this’ just makes me sad.

Then there’s Boyfriend Day 1. For the first time in a while, I was actually able to see them as a real couple instead of a joke one so that was nice. And the end scene makes me go 😭. But like, this also proves why they don’t work. Nate can’t handle Nikki’s ambition and barges into her tutoring session. I know Ozzie wasn’t the most helpful, but even before that, Nate was super jealous. Because ‘oh my god Nikki’s spending time with another guy’. It’s like how Ross Geller was about Rachel/Mark except less douchey.

Next is Summer Storm and they actually had a lot of cute moments here, with the umbrella scene, them giggling, and I liked hearing Nikki talking to Leia about the stuff in her relationship. But lmao at Leia saying that Nikki x Nate had an easy relationship. Like Leia ily, but you don’t know the half of it.

And in Dirty Double Booker, there’s an even bigger wedge driving between them. With Nate and Nikki being focused on their own things. So Nate goes to Leia and he’s happy. Now I actually like that scene and their hug. And the fact that he seemed to be realizing in the end that maybe things with Nikki might not be as strong as they thought. Like everyone at this point knows that I don’t ship Nate/Leia, but I feel like that scene was necessary. Even though Nate can be a dumbass at times, he is a smart guy. But he’s very insecure with Nikki. Whereas he was confident in that scene. I feel like that could’ve been a good arc where like ‘hey, maybe me and Nikki aren’t meant to be after all.’ without trying to have another ~romance~. But we’re talking about Nate/Nikki now, not Nate/Leia.

Then in Kids In America, it only gets worse. Nate not only continues to hide his feelings about the relationship, he tells Leia. And he literally calls Nikki “practical” (Nate tries to say it but didn’t know the word but if he knew, he def would’ve said it). Like I honestly had no sympathy for Nate in this scene. I get that he was was feeling insecure but he could’ve TALKED to Nikki about all of this. AND THEN ALMOST KISSING LEIA BEHIND HER BACK. Only THREE episodes before, Nate was all insecure and barging into Nikki’s tutoring session because he thinks she and Trevor had something. But he literally WOULD’VE KISSED Leia had Gwen not have walked in. Then him being all sad in the background when Jay and Leia are kissing while poor Nikki is completely oblivious and has no idea what’s going on. Like I get that Nate was having a hard time and this is all completely human BUT YOU DO NOT ALMOST KISS YOUR GIRLFRIEND’S FRIEND WHILE DATING SAID GIRLFRIEND. Like if he had been honest in the beginning scene, this would’ve been way less messy. Sure Nikki & Nate would’ve fought, but at least they could’ve broken up and there’d be no emotional nor physical cheating involved.

fonulyn’s 2020 in fics

this is kind of exciting since in 2020 I did get a lot writing done, and it marks the second year in a row that I’m able to actually make one of these posts after that horrible not good at all terrible disastrous three and a half years when I wrote absolutely nothing. so it’s a triumph to get another one of these up! personal victory haha.

in total, in 2020 I wrote 148 fics, ranging from like 200 words to 34k (idk if those short things can be called fics but i just did). by pairing, there’s

for now our time is here | 4,4k | When Chris had told them to wait up and left them alone for a while, this probably wasn’t what he’d been expecting, but the second he’d closed the door behind himself the tension that had been brewing between Leon and Piers had snapped like a cord.

the prettiest agent with the prettiest hair | 1,2k | Piers stress-braids. Leon doesn't mind. And besides, Piers always undoes the braids whenever he's done with them. Until one night he forgets.

you can be the air that i breathe | 1,0k | It wasn’t the first time Piers got punched in the face by a gigantic BOW so hard that the hit sent him flying. It was, however, the first time he was sent careening off a bridge and into the river below. And it was, definitely, the first time Leon saved his life.

before I found you | 890w | The second Piers realized that the spikes covering the monster actually came off, and it was able to shoot them towards its attackers, it was already too late for him to react.

Leon was slumped against the wall, hunched over and holding his side, and there was something feverish about his eyes. Yet as soon as he realized it was Piers he gave a shaky grin, even if that was all he managed.

why are the gorgeous ones always taken | 810w | Piers blinked his eyes open slowly, expression scrunched up, and it took a long moment before he managed to actually focus his gaze on Leon’s face. When he did, a smile immediately bloomed on his face, and he even tilted his head a little. “Have I died and gone to heaven?” he croaked out, his voice rough from lack of use.

It is noticeable how many people don't get the parallels between what Kate did to Derek, and what Peter did to Scott and Lydia.

Scott and Derek were around the same age (with Derek possibly being slightly older than Scott was in s1 when Derek first met Kate)

Both were targeted by an older adult who violated them, and tried to manipulate them..

Kate did so sexually, luring Derek into trusting her, so she could betray them and kill his family.

Peter did so by attacking Scott into the woods, violating his body, turning it into something Scott felt was no longer his own. After which Peter tried to mentally control Scott into killing people for him.

He did so in Pack Mentality, and again in Night School. It was only through a matter of luck and sheer strength of will, that Scott was able to resist Peter, when Peter tried to make him murder Stiles, Allison, Lydia and Jackson.

And when that wasn't enough, he put his claws in Scot's neck again in Co-Captain, and forced his memories of being burned alive into Scott's mind, mentally violating this sixteen year old child. Leaving him vulnerable, half naked shuddering in the cold and dark locker room after said violation. It's the scene in teen wolf that most closely resembles a rape scene in the entire series.

Peter also did the same to Lydia, first by physically violating her in s1, putting a part of himself in her, and then mentally violating her so she would use Derek to resurrect him.

Kate never showed any remorse over what she did to Derek, and held it over his head. Mocking him for falling for her manipulation.

Just like Peter never showed any remorse over what he did to Scott and Lydia, and held it over their heads. Mocking them for the trauma he caused them.

Yet fandom who has no problem to rightly hold Kate's actions against her, keeps on excusing Peter's actions. Even though what Peter did, was just as bad as what Kate did. It was on the same level of evil.

Yet in Kate's case, no one has a problem understanding that Derek was the victim.

While in Peter's case, fandom loves to treat his victims as the bad guys for not being appropriately grateful to Peter for the suffering he caused them.

Except that Scott isn't shitty in the slightest.

Scott is kind, caring, non judgmental, gentle, ... he is everything people have been saying they want in a character for years. He's that male protagonist who's nothing like the average cliché protagonist.

He's feminine coded, utterly lacked any kind of toxic masculinity, and was cautious, thoughtful...

It's sure odd how all those traits Scott actually has in canon, are suddenly only interesting when they are given to white characters, wouldn't you say?

Thinking on The Old Guard fics, and some issues I have with them of them.

Don't get me wrong, I love Booker. But I don't want to read Booker apologia.

I want to see Booker acknowledging he screwed up. That his mistakes are his own fault. to not see him blame others for his own actions.

I don't want to see him bashed, those fics suck. Booker screwed up, but he's a good person. He's not evil, or homophobic, or whatever else people like to throw at him to make him the bad guy in some fics, which ugh...

But I do want to see him treated as the 250 year old man he is, rather than as a toddler who can't make his own decisions. I want to see him treated as a man who could have talked to his friends, to his family, and made the mistake not to do so.

Rather than have the writer put the blame on the others for 'not paying enough attention to him'.

My problem with a lot of Booker fics, is how many of them blame the others, especially his primary victims, aka Joe and Nicky, for what Booker did to them/put them through., the suffering he caused them.

And as such they do an injustice to Booker as a character, because by taking the blame away from him, and not letting him face consequences, they make him less of a character, less interesting as a whole.

What I loved about Booker in the movie, is that he knew he screwed up, and he accepted that the punishment he got was just. That he deserved it.

And it's that acceptance that makes it possible for the others to forgive him.

If Booker had acted as he does in some fics, where he's resentful at the others for daring to hold him to account, and not wanting to see him for a long while, then he'd be far less of a man, and far less interesting a character. And there definitely wouldn't be a way for him to rejoin the group, until he accepted he did wrong in the first place.

It's because Booker already recognized the others were right, that he needed to pay for his actions, that will make it possible for his punishment to be ended sooner, because he has actually learned from his mistakes.

But you can't have that, without him being punished and him accepting said punishment, in the first place.

There are so many things I love about Hawkeye.

The representation, with Clint being hard of hearing, Maya being deaf and wearing a prosthetic.

The fact that the show is actually holding Clint accountable for what he did as Ronin. That his pain didn't excuse the fact that because of him, Maya lost her Dad.

That killing bad guys comes with consequences. Because criminals have families too...

The relationship between Kate and Clint, which is so great, because it's so nice to see a mentor-mentee relationship that is so clearly father-daughter like, with not a hint of shppiness in it...

And I just love how clint is just so tired of it all, and just wants to go home to his family. It makes him so much deeper a character.

I love how honest he is to his wife, that he doesn't hide what he's up to. No matter how little we see of her, I just love their relationship.

What I find odd is how many youtube reviews of TOG that I’ve seen, complain that the movie started too slow. By which they mean, that they wished the movie would have done without the baklava scene, and just started in the action.

The odd bit about this, is how many of us who are fans of the movie, cite the baklava scene as an absolute favorite.

For me personally, it is that scene specifically, that lets us get to know these characters, that shows us what they’re like when they’re not in danger, that makes you care enough to get into the rest of the movie. It’s the very scene that sets up the found family.

It is because of this scene, that as a viewer, you care when the characters end up in danger a few scenes later. In effect, it’s an essential scene that gives the characters personality, that builds the sense of family between them, and that more than anything makes you care when you find out at the end that Booker betrayed them all.

I’m not saying it’s the only scene that makes people care. But it’s the scene that opens people up to the potential of caring for these characters, and it does so in a way that the other scenes after this, where you find out more about the characters, mean more. Because as a viewer, you already like them, so their backstories mean more.

To make a comparison. I recently tried watching Extraction with Chris Hemsworth. It was only a few weeks ago, and already I can’t remember either his characters name, and barely remember what the movie was about. I sure as hell don’t remember the action scenes, and at no point did I care about any of the characters. (which for me made the action scenes fall flat)

I’ve read that apparently his char lost his son, and that that’s why he connected with the kidnap victim he was supposed to save and so on... But the point is, I didn’t notice this during the movie, cause I just couldn't bring myself to care for his character or his story. And because of this the movie to me, felt like a slog. And that’s while I actually usually really like Chris Hemsworth as an actor.

And a big part of that is because the writers of Extraction didn’t set us up to care for him. They didn’t let us know him, they didn’t take the time and space to properly introduce him in a way that would make me give a fuck. And as such the entire movie to me felt boring and forgettable.

In comparison, because TOG made me care, I wanted to see more, I want a sequel, I bought the comics the movie was based upon, I want to see fanfic explore these characters, I want to see fanart, be part of the fandom, all because the movie made sure these characters mattered.

The action set scenes were cool, but they were cool in part because you cared about the characters in the action scenes, and the action told part of their story, developed their characters. It wasn’t action for the sake of action.
